Online reading assignment: eclipses, history of astronomy (SLO campus)

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. "I did sort-of believe that things said about astrology could be true. However, after finding out that my sign actually isn't my sign made me rethink the time I have spent reading my horoscope. Maybe my new sign will be even more accurate."

"I have learned that astronomy is completely different then what I expected. I learned there is so much more information regarding horoscopes and other ideals given by astronomers. I do agree it is a little weird to think about the different cycles being able to control your future, which is why I disagree."

"I have never believed in astrology, and I still do not believe in it, but I do think it is entertaining to read such detailed predictions about certain astrological signs. I love to pretend that it is real."

"Can we go over in more detail about the different eclipses?" (Yes, especially with the feedback you've given me.)

"How can they predict how long an eclipse will be?" (The motion of the moon revolving around Earth (and how the moon's orbit wobbles) is very well understood. Even without computers, past astronomers could predict eclipses quite well from just recognizing how the timing of eclipses repeats over many years.)

"Why is the moon red during a total lunar eclipse?" (Even though the moon is in Earth's shadow during a total lunar eclipse, light from the sun passes through Earth's atmosphere all around its edges, so then the moon is basically lit by sunset (and sunrise) light.)

"I find that trying to keep track of how things move across the sky as seen from Earth versus how they move among the background stars to be confusing at times, and I have trouble keeping track of their direction. Can this be clarified or explained in a way that might help make it stick? (We'll go over planetary prograde and retrograde motion in detail next week.)

"Polarization has been easier to understand from the presentation and in class activities. Based on the way the antenna or whatever transmission device is facing, polarization will occur neither above or below, but alongside it."

"In all honesty I found this material unclear without an instructor's explanation. Extra help and clarification is needed."

"The lesson was pretty easy to understand regarding the function of antennas and their waves. The use of vertical and horizontal antennas have different uses such as for airplanes or old fashion televisions."

Unpolarized light shines through two ideal polarizing sheets, that have their transmission axes aligned at right angles to each other. How much of the original intensity is transmitted through these two sheets?

Note that whatever its orientation, one-half of the original background unpolarized light always passes through the second polarizer, whether the second polarizer transmits or blocks light that passed through the first polarizer.
Unpolarized light is projected through the first (smaller) polarizer. If the transmission axis of this first polarizer is horizontal, then one-half of the unpolarized light will pass through, and the light that passes through is now horizontally polarized.

Students have a weekly online reading assignment (hosted by SurveyMonkey.com), where they answer questions based on reading their textbook, material covered in previous lectures, opinion questions, and/or asking (anonymous) questions or making (anonymous) comments. Full credit is given for completing the online reading assignment before next week's lecture, regardless if whether their answers are correct/incorrect. Selected results/questions/comments are addressed by the instructor at the start of the following lecture.
